Titel:The Big Cheese II- Gruyere Cycling Tour
Sportler: Slogfester
Sportart:Rennrad fahren
Ort: Vuadens (Switzerland)
Beschreibung:Myself, Will and Martin (Team Cheese) raced this for a second time (see http://www.gps-sport.net/trainings/Gruyere-Cycling-Tour-2007_3781), all of us keen I think to see how we would stack up after the Tour dEnfer earlier in the year. However I didnt fancy my chances because all I seem to have done since is eat, sleep and eat some more!

In perfect conditions c. 1500 riders set off at 0830. Its an amazing experience to be in a 500 man pelaton for the first part of the race before the hills start spreading the field out.

All was well until about 36 km and half way down the first narrow and technical descent of Col de Mittenberg. I came round a blind right hand corner on -10 percent doing c. 40 kph and was faced with about 5 m of untarmaced rough gravel road (apparently not been fixed since last year), with one guy stopped in one of the wheel tracks and another going so slow in the other track that I had to brake much more than I wanted to on dirt with 23 race wheels on! Either I took one of them out or tried to stop. Inevitably the front washed out and I went down on to my left side. Ouch. I picked myself up and a few guys stopped to see if I was OK. One of them -I was told later by fellow paceliners- was none other than Fabian Cancellara, Swiss Olympic gold (and bronze) medalist, World TT champ and TdF CSC rider and -yes- nice guy. Quite what he was doing behind me I dont know. Probably stopped to sign autographs at the top of the first col!
(You can see the exact spot on the map marked by the first little man doing a press-up! Such is the detail on these things, if you zoom in satellite view you can actually see where I fell and then moved over to the side of the track!)
Anyway, after a quick damage report Scotty (Bike? Check. Body? Buggered, but that was before the crash!) and having decided it was easier to continue than to bale (yes, Im a chicken) I got back on the bike and headed off down the mountain again. I think I was more in shock having dropped the bike, the first time ever on the road bike, than from the injuries. But as I started to ascend the next Col (Pillon) I realised that I had managed to embed half the road in to my left thigh! But its a great way of taking your mind off the pain of racing up mountains!

From about the 50 km mark I found myself in a 10-20 man bunch who were all very kindly concerned about my welfare and who -after finding out I was from Australia and seeing my name on my number plate- referred to me as Cadel. I wondered if this was good thing! But being in a group always spurs me on and so I pushed much harder than on my own up the hills and started to enjoy myself. If you look at the heart rate profile you can see that this race is like one long TT (ascents and flats) with a few breaks (descents)!I was a little worried that I would prematurely burn-out, especially where there is a final pinch at 100 km and where I cramped up last year, but there were thankfully no such problems this year. Indeed our group was flying and working well as a (now) 7-10 man paceline with each of us taking good strong turns roughly staying together on the climbs. So much so that we got ourselves a motorbike escort (I think they roam about looking for groups) and picked up several larger groups/pacelines on the 25 km flat in to Bulle.
A great race for me was capped by the fact that I took out the c. 20 man sprint to the line to come in 20 mins ahead of my time last year. (Race)Job done.

Unfortunately I then had to get the road dug out of my leg at the medical centre. They cut my blood-stained and ripped bibs open with scissors (luckily Id not worn the Gruyere race kit, so can replace :) to reveal a rather nasty deep and dirty road rash which they then proceeded to dig gravel out of. Its such a satisfying ping as pieces of gravel are dug out and chucked in the pan! Luckily for me, French speaking best buddies Will and Martin rocked up to help with the translation (Where is the nearest
