| Beschreibung: | My next door neighbour and friend Patrick is an Ironman. You know, one of the those nutters that do a 3.8 km swim, followed by a 180 km bicycle ride, and then finish it off with a full run marathon (42 km). These guys are fit! So when he popped round and said he was off for a ride, I was a little hesitant. Id had a big TT day yesterday, no porridge this morning and no lunch. Usually this wouldnt mattter so much, but the first time I rode with Patrick and his mates I had to make an emergency stop at McDonalds to refuel and they have been pulling my leg ever since! However, it seemed summer has finally arrived so I couldnt resist the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine at last.
As usual I was slow and creaky to start, despite the warmer temperatures. For the first flatish 40 km I often struggled to keep up with Patrick, even though he was just idling along. The problem was I couldnt get my heart rate up above 81 percent. It seemed to be stuck. Ive read somewhere that this can sometimes happen. Perhaps as a result of yesterdays efforts. As we approached the climb up Saxel I was worried that I wouldnt even make it up, let alone keep up with Patrick! However, as we passed another cyclist (adrenlin surge?) and got out the saddle to climb a hairpin bend, suddenly the HR broke through the 81 percent barrier and whoooosh, I was off! The difference was incredible, even just sitting at 85 percent for most of the climb, I zoomed up in 2nd and 3rd gear. After that I felt fine and was even able to form a paceline with Patrick on the way home.
Welcome Summer... its about time you finally showed up :)
Actually 90km/790m @ 27kph... gizmo lost GPS again... sigh
