I'm starting to get a "hate on" for Polar as a company. I called Polar USA, they gave me a list of Canadian companies I can order from. about 10-12 in total, NOT 1 of the running or exercise stores carries the bluetooth unit, nor can or will they order it, 2 of the bike stores indicated they would order it, it's been about 3 weeks now and they've had multiple conversations with Polar and as of this morning Polar inidcated they will not sell them the unit as it's not bicycle specific. The bike shop recommended an authorized Polar Repair store and they are looking into this for me.
I think it's time to bury my Zephyr HxM as it's next to useless, as it was diconnecting randomly on today's run and then saying week hrm signal,I could only think about the joy of doing this to it.....
Yeah, the strap I bought was the standard wearlink+ replacement one. It's the wearlink+ with Bluetooth transmitter that's the problem getting in Canada. We'll see what happens on Tuesday with the 2 bike shops I need to follow up with. Interesting, most of the local running stores were completely clueless.
I'll have to see what happens with the HxM and Polar strap over the next few runs this week.
Not all phones have accelerometers, in particular non touchscreen windows mobile phones amongst otheres. Personally the phones I use/have used with Run.GPS are far from "current" phones
HTC Touch Diamond (my current workhorse while I wait for my Tilt2 to be supported)
HTC Touch Pro
Samsung BlackJack II
HTC Touch Pro 2 (AT&T Tilt 2) - awaiting next version of Run.GPS for BTC (bluetooth serial port) support
O2 XDA Flame
Nokia N900 Running Android (Nitdroid with 2.1, 2.2 and most recently 2.3.4)
The Tilt2 would be the most recent phone and it's probably a 2 year old phone.
With the exception of the Tilt2 with BTC Issue and the Nokia N900 with the Gingerbread reboot issue, the other phones all "just work" with external HRM and external GPS, known issues with the HxM notwithstanding. I'm looking forward to trying out the Polar unit.
As far as I can tell, you could use any Polar "wearlink" strap since the BT unit uses the same straps as the "standard" Polar (wearlink) HRMs. I'm not sure if availability in North America is better for the "standard" Polar wearlink so this might not relly help you...
Btw theZephyr HxM still works fine for me with the Polar wearlink strap. That said, I would like to mention that the Polar wearlink BT unit does a good job as well. However, I started to pay more attention to my cadence which is why I like using the Zephyr.
This makes me wonder why RunGPS does not use the accelerometer most current phones have, in order to determine the cadence... ok, off topic...
Called Polar and they don't ship to Canada either.... <sigh>, they gave me 5 local retailers, 2 of which I'd already called and who don't carry the unit, ended up with 2 bike stores that indicate they can order it from Polar and I should check back on Tuesday after the holiday.

Well thought I'd try the suggestion by runnergreg to use a Polar strap with the Zephyr Hxm. Started calling around to see if anyone had the Wearlink+ Bluetooth strap, but no such luch, Finally found a local sports shop that carried spare straps (CDN$25) after calling about 10 stores. Asked (Runners and Rackets on Oak St in Vancouver) about the Polar BT unit and they said they'd get back to me. Got to the store, picked up the strap and was told the Wearlink+ BT is only available in Europe with no ETA for the North American Market :-(
I've had my Zephyr HxM since May 2010 and it worked fine for a few months with intermittent flakiness, and for the past 6 months it's been totally unreliable
Took the strap home and discovered you don't need to cut the rubber grommet off, using a pair of pliers you can pull on it until you uncover the inner hole and loop it over the metal connector. Advantage if you want to reverse the process, you can.
So hooked up my Zephyr transmitter, wet the sensor pads with warm tap water, and put it on while getting ready for my run, Run.GPS was showing a heart rate of 221bpm, sat for a few minutes and it changed maybe 5 bpm less. While the cadence was showing around 16, disconnected and reconnected in RunGPS about 3 times before I got a reasonable heart rate around 68bpm and cadence slowly went down to zero. Then started running, nornally with the Zephyr strap Run.GPS will start saying too slow hearbeat, usually 33 or 44bpm, then after about 15 minutes of running it starts giving some reasonable readings, then goes off again with crazy numbers, either too fast or too slow. I sometimes have reasonable readings when I finish my run, maybe 15-30% of the time.
Today with the Polar strap, started off okay, as I warmed up, numbers seemed reasonable and then for most of the run it got stuck at 145bpm, at the end of the run (about 4.5km) as I started walking to cool down, it would fluctuate from 145bpm to 66bpm and back. The with further walking it would drop to 33bpm, 44bpm, 64bpm and 65bpm...<sigh>
As I sit here typing this, it's reading 31bpm, then just jumped to 106bpm and back to 31bpm.
So... A partial success for the start of the run but overall still quite disappointed with my Zephyr HxM. I'll report back after a few more runs. And in the meantime I'll look to order a Polar Wearlink+ BT unit.
Any suggestions on where to order one in North America and ideally in Canada to save on the shipping?
Actually looks like it's available from the Polar USA website
How to "fix" your Zephyr HXM when experiencing HR dropouts
Hello again...,
I was about to sell my Zephyr because it did not work for me due to the drop out/lock up issue. Also, I was (and I still am) very happy with my Polar Wearlink Bluetooth. I suspected problems with the electrodes but water and contact gel did not work.
Then I noticed this: The connectors on the Polar Wear Link Belt are exactly the same (brand and spacing) as the ones on the Zephyr belt. THe only things that prevented me from connecting the Zephyr HxM to the Polar strap were the little rubber supports around the contact buttons on the strap.
So I used a pair of nail scissors to cut down the rubber (removed approx. 1mm) around each button and voila, I could connect the Zephyr to the Polar strap.
I used the Zephyr with the Polar strap three times now without any problems!
So if anyone has experienced "contact" problems with the Zephy HxM strap, just get a spare Polar wear link strap (I paid 19 Euros) and cut down the little rubber edges until the Zephyr clicks in.
Works great for me (no excessive soaking required, not contact gel), of course it might not work for you.
Hi friends,
I search advise to buy the article in subject.
I looked the program - config - frequency but there isn't the polar.
Is the WearLink right fot the program?
Can I buy it or it's better I buy another HR (Zephyr™ HxM)?
thank you
