The features you folks are adding are net based and do require net connectivity which most low-mid range PNA do not have so I understand fully that a PNA is not the recommended choice of platform. Also why you would not want to expend much time and energy to figure this combination out.
I could not determine as yet how much free memory is needed on the device to support the framework as well as run.gps. That is necessary for me to shop a PNA. If I find a used one cheap enough I'd like to at least test to see if a PNA and run.gps work sufficiently well together. If you don't need the real time updating, it seems like a viable and value oriented solution for some.

As you can see they run on the newer Windows CE 5 Core and also have quite a but of memory, much more than the older smaller units. I'll research more into the device requirements to run .NET
If you don't have the device yet, it's difficult to buy one because we just can't say which models are compatible.
Another argument against using PNAs for Run.GPS is that they don't have cell phone connectivity, which means that you cannot use the online functions of Run.GPS (downloading maps, Live Tracking, displaying nearby Wikipedia articles and placemarks, ...).
It is not explicitly stated as a supported platfrom but what is your sense about how well Run.GPS runs on an unlocked PNA device?
I did some research and over 100 pna models are listed on this great site.
http://smartphonedb.com/index.php?m=pdalist&list=pna
About 80% run WinCE 5.0 Core and the remaining 20% run 4.2.
From the MS site it states the following requirement for the .net compact framework redistribute. Is WinCE 5.0 Core and Windows CE .NET 5.0 equivalent in this situation?
"Supported Device Operating Systems: Windows Mobile Software for Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0 for PocketPC and Smartphone, Windows CE .NET 5.0 and higher."
If I buy a pna I'd like to make sure it is as compatible as possible with Run.GPS.
Run.GPS runs on Win CE devices IF the .NET Compact Framework can be installed on the device (not possible for all Win CE models). As a user reported, we also have still the problem that the device is not switched to fullscreen mode correctly (a bar remains on top and there is not enough space on the bottom).
If you have such a device and manage to install the .NET CF, we can assist with Run.GPS installation.
I was wondering if run.gps runs on wince devices. The market is flooded with 3.5" - 4.5" touch GPS devices and many deals on used units. These can easily be unlocked to gain access to the underlying wince OS and it seems very cool if run.gps could be loaded onto these devices. With built in GPS and touchscreen it might open up new markets for such a great software.

Smartphones
The current version of Run.GPS can be used on the Pocket PC versions of Windows Mobile:
- Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC
- Windows Mobile 5 for Pocket PC
- Windows Mobile 6 Professional
Basically, all Windows Mobile OS that use a touch screen + stylus are supported.
What about the Smartphones?
The Smartphones do not come with a stylus - they have to be controlled by keys only. Therefore, they require a different user interface. We will provide this with the next major release.
IMPORTANT: Upgrading to the coming big release will be free for all Run.GPS licence owners. You do not have to buy a new licence.
The coming major release will support the following OSs:

Hi! Today I have installed the trial version on my HTC Touch Cruise and it works fine. In the next weeks I'm going to test running and cycling. I'll even try it in my car...
