Another waisted training session with the windows phone app
I just tried the app again this morning an it happened on my first ride after a fresh install. I was hoping a firmware and app update might have solved the problem.
I still would love to use the app, can any one give this issue some attention please.
I have changed my mobil from a HTC android to Nokia Lumia and still haven't buy the application (on WP). Waiting for a solution before buy on Windows phone.
I have tested and when i switch off the screen, the track recording stop too. I must blocked the application on and my battery get low quickly.
Over the last week the app has stopped working pthree times. Each time I have had to reinstall it to get it to work again and the last time it failed I rode 89km, so no data for a a 3.5 hour workout.
I think I have given the app a fair go but I am going to stop using it and use another app that I know works consistently. The reason I have persisted is because I believe Run.GPS is certainly the most featured and adaptable app of its kind available for Windows Phones and I just love using it when it works.
A few observations that I would like to make given I have installed and reinstalled the app about 30 times include:
I have not been able to identify what causes it to stop tracking in sleep mode, it could be my phone, it could be the app, it could be Nokia 920s in general.
When the problem occurs, there is nothing that I have been able to find that fixes it apart from reinstalling it. Restarting the phone does not help, restoring the settings to normal does not help.
When the problem occurs, connection to the heart monitor acts like the tracking, that is, when in sleep mode, there appears to be no connection between the app and the heart monitor.
When the problem occurs the app does however keep tracking time.

What you’re describing happens to me too, however the problem I have been having does not seem to be about signal strength – it just does not record when the device is in sleep mode.
On the first occasion the problem occurred, I put my phone in my cycle shirt pocket (on my back) and trained as normal, the signal was fine when I started. When I opened the phone to end the session, 40 min later, I could see it had recorded the duration but no distance or anything else.
On a second occasion when I noticed the problem was occurring, I wanted to see what was actually happening so I turned on the screen in the middle of the session and noticed that the track would jump from the point I started to the point to where I turned on the screen – It would also track during the time I had the screen on. After turning the screen off it would then only update the track to the point that I would open it up again. In the end I just got a track going from each point I turned on the screen to the next. From memory, I think I also noticed that at each point, the GPS signal would go from no bars to 4. each time I turned on the screen.
While this might indicate it the gps had a bad signal, I think it indicates it was not on because it would track every time I turned on the screen – if it were on while the screen was locked it would have at least tracked around that point as the signal strength was clearly very strong.
I think the difficult thing is that I have not discovered one thing that causes the problem consistently.
The only adjustments I made on the first time it happened was to turn off some of the voice notifications. Another time I created a different screen.
There must be something.
It is working fine now. I have created a training plan, uploaded it and ran it, all ok.
I have changed some of the voice notifications, all ok.
Perhaps next I will create a custom screen.
I have tested it again and for me, recording stops only if GPS sight is bad (device placed in a bag or in a pocket). If I place it in the top pocket of my backpack, it continues to record as long as I want.
Thanks for this information. I checked the operating system version and it turned out that the device description is simply wrong and should read "Windows Phone" instead of "Windows Phone 7". We have corrected this.
I have tried to reproduce the behaviour by
1) Modifying the screen layout
2) Starting a new training recording
3) Pressing the sleep button
But it does work for me so far. Strange. Does anyone else have this problem?
Could it be that the GPS signal is weak and will fail when you put the device in your pocket?
We do not have a Nokia 920 so I had to test it with a differnt WP8 phone.
In adition to the information below, I was looking at my uploaded information recently and I noted that the device description as 'NOKIA RM-821 apac australia new zealand 304 - (Windows Phone 7) running Run.GPS 2.7.8 Full build 3010'.
I am not sure if it is important but the device I am using is a Nokia 920 which is a Windows 8 phone.
I mention the above because you mentioned that the version of OS was important.
From a software developer's point of view, I can only emphasize that there must be some other reason that the GPS / track recording stops when you press the sleep button. If you change the configuration of the screens, this only means that some xml file is stored in the memory. Anyway, I'll try this out and see if I can reproduce the behaviour.
