Windows Bridge for iOS: Where we are and where we are headed

There are good news from this project based on IOS apps:

We already have a working version of Run.GPS for Astoria. GPS does work - only not while the phone is on standby mode :-(

GPS not supported very soon

Somewhere I saw some screenshots from a presentation where Microsoft talked about the features they plan to support in Astoria this year... GPS was one of the features marked as not supported...

No background execution for Windows-Android bridge "Project Astoria"

Not very hopeful about this ...

Statement by Microsoft's Kevin Gallo:

"Apps are not running in the background and there are some changes made so they behave like a well-behaved app."

Hi!
I used google translate, because the text was in portuguese (my language), but this article shows that Microsoft is already testing Android apps in the Microsoft mobile appstore. Let´s hope that the background execution could be implemented.

The article:

Project Astoria would be cool because we would have the full power of the Android app (with its complete feature set) without having to invest much time in software development.

We've tested this solution on a Nokia Lumia 925 and the app basically runs, BUT the big question is:

WILL PROJECT ASTORIA SUPPORT BACKGROUND EXECUTION?

It is vital to many apps (including Run.GPS). Without it, you cannot track your GPS coordinates while the device is in standby mode.

Some facts:

- Background execution does not work in the current release of Astoria

- Microsoft states there is a "Background execution model": http://androidphonehub.com/news-2/windows-10-it-will-be-possible-to-directly-execute-an-android-application-apk/

- Android phone hub says the apps WON'T RUN IN BACKGROUND MODE: http://androidphonehub.com/news-2/windows-10-it-will-be-possible-to-directly-execute-an-android-application-apk/

- Some others say background execution IS possible: http://winecos.com/?/article/447

- Other Android bridges do support background execution, e.g. the Android Runtime for Blackberry: https://developer.blackberry.com/android/

We need to find out if project Astoria will be suitable or not to decide whether to put all resources on the development of a Windows Universal app or if we can publish a full-featured Android based app with Astoria ...

Good work :)

This is really GREAT News! Good luck! So Project Astoria isn't something for you? I was in hope that we'll get the same functionality compared to Android and so quicker updates...

Yes we've already started re-engineering the Windows Phone 8.1 Silverlight app into a Windows 10 Universal app :-)

We haven't been lucky with the Windows Phone 8.1 app since it could never be published because Microsoft did not allow background location tracking for Windows Phone 8.1 apps, but I hope everything will work out for Windows 10 for Phones.

WP10 app

Hi!

The windows phone 10 should be released before the end of this year.
Is there any plans for a WP10 app? (Project Astoria or other similar aproach, or even a native app)

Best Regards,
Nuno
