Once connected, mine stays connected. But, if I turn bluetooth off (in phone settings) to save phone battery (for example when having coffee), then I can not re-connect without closing/opening run.gps.
Hope this helps with the your diagnosis and programming.

I've just tested it and auto-connect does work for me. But on some devices the Bluetooth 4.0 connections are not extremely stable. For instance, sometimes I need 3 tries to get BLE connected on certain devices.

Run.GPS 2.8.1 will come with improved Bluetooth LE support (auto-reconnect, cadence sensors, ...), so this might also make auto-connect on startup more stable.

One thing that does not work is auto-connect heart rate monitor?

Configuration/Heart rate monitor/auto-connect on startup

Always have to manually connect.

Good News....
Updated my stock/unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 from Android 4.1.2 to 4.3, using Samsung OTA.
Run.gps 2.8.0 UV Pro connected with my (new) Polar H7 HRM using BLE :)
Look forward to connecting with other BLE devices.

OK thanks for confirmation.
I will take the plunge and update my S3 to 4.3. The official Samsung update has been re-released in UK (plus many more countries) after the first was withdrawn due to major problems.
Looking forward to having a HR monitor and, when available, speed/cadence :)
I read that 4.4 is not far off too.
Unfortunately my phone is still under warranty, otherwise I would go Cyan or similar. Samsung have lost a lot of credibility because of upgrade delays and bugs.

Only Android 4.3 brings official BLE support (within the Android os). For Android 4.2 and earlier versions, proprietary libraries may exist that bring BLE support to your phone. Run.GPS supports only the offical Android 4.3 BLE API.

I read on a forum somewhere that the Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.1.2 WILL connect with a Polar H7, but would not AFTER updating the phone to official 4.3 (new/second release)!!! Can anyone comment?

The Bluetooth LE HRM support has been added on Oct 16th (release 2.8.0). I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.2 (Android 4.3) on some of my devices. If you have Bluetooth 4.0 hardware, you'll be able to use Bluetooth LE when you install CM10.2.

Yes, you need Android 4.3 or 4.4 to utilize BLE.

I am curious about this. I too have a Samsung Galaxy S3 which runs the stock 4.1.2. My understanding is that under 4.1.2 it can not utilise its bluetooth 4? So how does it connect with the Polar H7 back in Aug 2013? Samsung started to release a 4.3 update in Germany and UK in November 2013, but it was so rubbish they withdrew it. It is supposed to be rolling out again, but has still yet to appear for my device.
