This is because of the Windows Mobile strategy that when memory is lacking other programs are shut down no matter if they have unsaved data. You have to copy all files that have to do with TomTom Navigator: /Programs/Navigator, /My Documents/TomTom, /TomTom and all the maps. After the ROM upgrade you can copy back all those files - then it's possible to start TomTom from the Explorer.
