Hello folks

Does anybody have any experience with using external GPS for Run.GPS/ Android ?

I purchased a Qstarz 818XT which has very impressive specs. Good battery life. 66 channels. 1hz, 10hz update speed.

In order to connect it to your Android (I have Samsung Galaxy S2) you seem to have to install some bridge software.
I tried 2. One is from Mobile J and it's called Bluetooth GPS (red icon). The other one is called Bluetooth GPS (at least this icon is blue :))... It's made by Googoo.

Both of them connects to my external GPS and using googlemap I can see that it has pinnpointed my actual location. Comparing with internal GPS it seems a tad more accurate...

However I've ran the exact same route 3 times... 1 with red external, 1 with blue external and 1 with internal.

By far the internal one reports the route most accurate... I wait at least 3-4 minutes before I start running to see that the GPS has locked onto a good signal. So each trip should have the exact same results.

red trip

internal trip

Basically my trip is to run along the river to a small hil.. that I run straight up and then circle down using a road on it... I do that 3 times and then I run back exactly the same route. Only the internal one captured that correctly.

However for all 3 altitude is a sad story..... I'm running next to the Thames.. not Niagra Falls.. the altitude is all over the place.

Looking at my GPS reception I can see that I have 12/ good sat coverage throughout.

Interesting enough all of them recorded the same distance.. 3.7 miles...

Why am I getting so poor results here ?

Under the GPS setting on run.gps I have the following settings set.

Smoothing speed buffer : 35 seconds. What does this mean ?
Smoothing altitude buffer 5s.... what does that mean ?

Any thoughts/ help/ experience is much appriciated in this space.

Thanks
