@gjoess: With "I/O button" I meant the metallic button on the top right edge of the HTC where you can switch on/off the device. I used to use this button for turning off the screen (instead of locking the screen)

@admin: Now I found out that it works to lock the screen by pressing and holding the right softkey (red phone key that you normally use to end a call). After a while a menu appears where you can select the "lock screen" option.
(I furthermore found out that you can configure this button but it is enough for me).
The screen will stay switched on but the keys (even the home key) are locked and the path will be recorded.
So this is the solution for my problem!

In the meantime I learned to handle the small buttons better so anything's fine now! I'm happy!

what do you mean by I/O buton ?

I'm having problems with HTC Mini to use both GPS and the zephyr. I used this kit fine with my HTC Diamond and HTC Diamond 2.

If I don't use the zephyr the GPS track works fine. It defaults to COM2 when I add it.
However if I change the GPS not to be windows managed and manually to COM8 and not .net it finds the GPS ok.

When I fire it up... during initialising just after GPS it always ask to add the bluetooth serial device (heart rate monitor)
I then wait for heart rate to display my heart rate and I see all the green bar for GPS...

I press the start button and off I go...

I can see on the GPS details that GPS speed shows up... I get alltitude, good signal and so on.

However ont he main screen (default)

Avg Speed total registers speed and Ditance registers (is it using something other than GPS for that ?)
while Speed and Pace shows up as 0...

Any thoughts ?

I've toggled location service pieces off-on.. no difference.

I know this solution works on other HTC devices running Windows Mobile, but I did not have the opportunity to test it on HTC HD Mini yet.

Wouldn't your solution lead to switching off GPS module? (same effect like pressing I/O button?)

Or did you already test this workaround?

btw- your idea changing the layout doesn't satisfy my needs because I already customized the screen ...

But I will test your solution and give a short notice!

- You can change the layout of your screen and insert a big start/stop button somewhere.

- The solution for your button lock problem should be:
1) activate function "When app is locked" >> "turn off screen completetly"
2) do not press the power button but instead use the lock symbol >> now the screen should shut down completely and only the power button remains active

HTC HD Mini

Yes I've tested it. The program is running. There are only three annoying things:
- because you don't have real hardware keys (especially middlebutton and the navigation cross) you have to use the very small icons for starting/stopping the training or locking the screen
- when you press the I/O button (on top) the GPS module will be switched off and so your track will not be logged.
- the home button cannot be deactivated whhile the screen is locked (even the option lock keys completely doesn't work) --> so you need a protecting case where the home button cannot be pressed (otherwise the program would be put in the background; I'm not sure if the GPS signal would be logged) --> that's why I am jogging with the phone in my hand (I could put my old HTC Touch in my pocket during the training!) =(((
- the automatic locking of the screen (screensaver mode after 10sec) can only me avoided by switching background light ON --> surely not the best solution for hiking or longer tours (but for my jogging in the morning it is OK)

If anybody would know a solution or fix for these bugs --> please answer this post.

I did not test it with the HD mini yet, but the resolution is supported.
