| Description: | Opportunities to ride have been few and far between recently. First there was the Xmas break complete with –in my case- a bad cold/chest, and then for the past 2 weeks there has been record amounts of snow/ice on the roads making it all but impossible to venture out except on a mtb with nobblies. And I haven’t been in a rush to get wet/cold/splattered with mud and end up on my backside because I just got a new indoor trainer. So I have been exploring the slightly weird world of ergo training with power metres (much more on this later!), anethestised by watching the 14 hour box set of the 2009 TdF, none of which I’ve seen before because I was –yes- busy cycling!
So it was great to get out today on Zip (mtb/tourer) and test the legs on my local hill repeat course after a 4 week break. One word springs to mind- Ouch! Along with being unfit, my times were also down because I am now running 2.25” nobblies on Zip (compared to heavy duty 1.75” touring tyres before Xmas) at a comparatively low pressure in order to get some traction and stay upright on the very rough lanes that I train on which are now covered with a mix of water/ice/mud/horse shit/branches/holes etc. But it did give me an idea for a goal for the future. Can I beat my PB set on pumped up touring tyres with low pressure nobblies? I’m thankful for small mercies though. When I opened the garage I discovered a flat front tyre. Not sure what caused it, but as soon as I unscrewed the valve it came off in my hand. It had rotted away from the inner tube! And when I came back I must have run over a nail or something in the driveway because the same tyre went down again in 2 mins flat. Excuse the pun :) |
