Unfortunately I had to withraw from the Grand Bo cyclosportive at short notice due to a chest infection. Never the less I showed my support for Will and Martin by selfishly rising at 8:15 to shout abuse at them as they went right past my chalet http://www.cycling-challenge.com/la-grand-bo-cyclosportive-2008/ before returning indoors to my 3rd croissant and coffee. Really, those blokes need to get a life and eat more donuts.
Instead myself and Sarah (an old and dear friend from UK visiting Geneva for business) went for a what I hoped would be a leisurely walk up the mountains. It was hot and steep, but neither of those bothered me so much as my aching legs and blisters. Its amazing how you can be so cycle fit and yet competely useless at walking. These days I dont even walk to the corner shop, prefering 2 wheels instead in a desparate attempt to prepare for the upcoming Tour of Hell http://www.cycling-challenge.com/cycling-the-routes-des-grandes-alpes-the-2008-tour-denfer/. I think I re-discovered muscles in my legs that had laid dormant for far too long. Dog walking veteran Sarah left me in her wake as she cleared off up the mountain, even hurling water bottles and my bag at me in an attempt to slow me down :)
The views on top were stunning and after a stop for a bite to eat we slid our way down (Sarah on her bum, me on my size 10s) the Combe de Paccaly for a well earned coffee and cake.
The blisters on my feet and aching muscles will no doubt remind me all week of what a great day it was. |
